Arcing happens when a light switch is turned on or even when you turn on a blow dryer. These are examples of normal, acceptable arcing.

Unsafe arcing happens when loose or corroded wiring causes sparking. This can result in an electrical fire.
An arc-fault breaker is able to detect these unsafe occurrences and shut down the circuit.
